Framex – quality under any circumstances
Dismantling old windows is a process that is often accompanied by exposure to various hazardous substances. Buildings built in the last century used materials that are now considered toxic or potentially hazardous to human health and the environment. During the work, dust, gases and particles can be released that pose a real threat.
1.Old-type building materials
Asbestos-cement boards – used as facing or thermal insulation material. When damaged, microscopic fibers enter the air, which can cause chronic lung diseases.
PCB (polychlorinated biphenyl) joint sealants – persistent organic pollutants that accumulate in the body and affect the nervous, immune and endocrine systems.
Wooden structures with PCP (polychlorinated phenols) – used as antiseptics for wood. Their fumes are toxic, can cause irritation and allergic reactions.
Concrete or mortars with chromium – especially hexavalent, have carcinogenic properties, affect the skin and respiratory tract.
Paints, plasters, leveling compounds, tile adhesives containing heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury) – when damaged or removed, can emit toxic dust.
2. Industrial and domestic pollution
MCH / BTECH (mineral hydrocarbons, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene) – especially relevant in production or warehouse areas, where such substances could seep into the walls or soil.
PAHs (polyaromatic hydrocarbons) – are contained in soot deposited from heating or ventilation systems. PAHs have carcinogenic potential.
Storage of acids, solvents and other chemicals – vapor residues or penetration of substances into materials can pose a serious danger if the integrity of structures is violated.
3. Secondary pollution of premises
Heavy metals, benzene and PAHs in walls and facades – can remain in materials after long-term industrial use of the building.
Mold, mold, pigeon droppings – biological factors that can cause allergies, bronchitis and other respiratory diseases.
4. Consequences of fires
Ash and soot after a fire can contain dioxins, furans, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and other toxic compounds that settle on surfaces and easily enter the air under mechanical impact.
Dismantling old windows may seem like a routine task, but in reality it is often accompanied by contact with a large number of toxic substances. Awareness of these risks allows you to take appropriate safety measures and prevent damage to the health of workers and residents of the building. It is better to conduct a preliminary inspection of structures, especially in old or industrial facilities, to avoid unpleasant and dangerous surprises.
