Window Measurement Guide
During initial conversations, clients usually specify the parameters of the window opening, but only a professional measurer can determine the full scope of the upcoming work. The work of a specialized expert is the only way to avoid additional costs and ensure a hassle-free installation. This guide will help you make the correct initial measurement of the working opening (window).
- Measurements are taken both outside and inside the building to further calculate the depth of the opening;
- Windows are always straight, but walls may not be. This applies not only to old buildings but also to new constructions. Therefore, you should always measure at different points and, in case of discrepancies, use the smaller measurement to determine the order size;
- It is best to conduct measurements at a minimum of three points: at the top, in the middle, and at the bottom;
- The installation gap is a safety distance that facilitates installation and acts as a compensator under extreme temperatures. The size of the installation gap depends on the width of the window and the type of profile;
- For convenience, we recommend drawing a window on a sheet of paper, next to which the dimensions will be added to the corresponding parts.

Measuring the window opening without the quarter
To determine the width of the frame for the future window, you should subtract the necessary installation gap of 20-40 mm from the width of the window opening (the smallest value of the three measurements), depending on the curvature of the wall. If you notice that the vertical parts of the opening have a significant difference in levels, it is better to take 40 mm.
The height of the window frame is determined by subtracting the installation gap at the top (15-20 mm) and the height of the base profile (30 mm) from the height of the window opening (the smallest value out of the three vertical measurements).
Also, it’s necessary to calculate the dimensions of the sill and drip edge. If there is an old sill, simply measure it with a tape measure. If the sill is not installed, to determine the length, measure the distance from jamb to jamb inside. The width of the sill depends on the depth of the window opening.
Important: The windowsill should not cover the heating radiator! You need to consider this and choose the optimal width for the windowsill. The length of the drip edge is determined by the distance from jamb to jamb on the outside. The width of the drip edge is determined from the window frame to its edge, with the drip edge extending 30-50 mm beyond the exterior wall.
Measurement of the window opening with a quarter
Quarters are often asymmetrical and may be skewed When measuring a window with a quarter, it is important to know a few basic rules:
- Window openings with a quarter, that is, a projection along the outer perimeter of the window equivalent to a quarter of a brick's width, are more complex to measure;
- The window frame should extend beyond the side quarter by 20-40 mm on each side, and beyond the top wall by 15-20 mm;
- The sill profile should be 10-20 mm higher than the lower wall, which is necessary for proper attachment of the drip edge;
- The width of the window frame is determined as the width of the window opening between the external slopes plus 40-60 mm for the frame to fit behind the quarters.
After calculating the width, it is necessary to ensure that this measurement does not exceed the width of the opening according to the internal slopes, as well as the distance between the points where the internal slopes meet the frame. If a subframe profile will be used during the window installation, the height of the window is determined as follows:
- The measurement from the base of the opening to the top slope minus 10-20 mm (for the installation gap at the bottom), minus 30 mm for the subframe profile, and plus 20 mm for the frame's extension over the top quarter;
- The height of the window should not exceed the distance from the bottom of the windowsill to the top inner slope
- The sizes of the windowsill and the sill extension are determined similarly to the measurements for window openings without quarters.
